Neighborhood speed studies

We run short, volunteer-collected screening studies to help neighborhoods document recurring speeding concerns. These are preliminary signals, not official engineering studies or enforcement tools. When results suggest a problem, we request city verification with standard equipment.

Methodology and limitations

Telraam S2

Used for longer-term neighborhood monitoring from a fixed window or other approved location with a clear view. Captures anonymous aggregate counts by mode and direction. For cars, provides estimated speed distributions and V85 speed. Best for multi-day patterns on residential streets, school approaches, neighborhood bikeways, and corridors where ongoing monitoring is useful.

  • Vehicle volume by time period and direction where available
  • Pedestrian, bicycle or two-wheeler, car, and heavy-vehicle activity
  • Estimated car speed distribution and V85 speed
  • Percent estimated above the posted limit, +5 mph, and +10 mph
  • Time of day patterns, including school or commute windows

Limitations: S2 does not provide per-vehicle raw speeds, plates, identifiable imagery, or enforcement-grade measurements. Speed is visually estimated and aggregated, not radar or lidar. Treat results as screening signals. Less appropriate for one-day deployments, complex intersections, obstructed views, or cases where distinguishing user type is central.

Fixed-camera video with DataFromSky

Used for short-duration, low-hardware-cost studies when a stable fixed-camera view is available. A volunteer records from a stable and preferably elevated position. Video is processed to extract counts, trajectories, speeds, directions, and user classes where feasible. Useful where context matters: school crossings, trail conflicts, speeding near pedestrians, or intersections where a short visual sample can show why a city follow-up study is warranted.

Limitations: Results depend on camera placement, stability, field of view, lighting, occlusion, and calibration. May not reliably distinguish all legal categories. For privacy, raw video is not published. Any public screenshots avoid identifiable faces or plates unless there is a specific legal or safety reason. Speeds are estimates unless independently validated.

Volunteer collection protocol

We follow a standardized field protocol. Volunteers document location, date, time, posted speed, weather, lighting, camera position, direction labels, and unusual conditions. Video studies require a fixed, stable camera. S2 studies require a clear view of a suitable segment and sufficient runtime for a representative sample. Where feasible, we perform short manual validation against device output.
