Hello, Provo Streets Watch has documented 10 reports, dated November 7, 2025 through August 31, 2026, describing unsafe vehicle activity near Timpanogos Elementary and nearby crossings. All 10 reports concern events at one of two specific locations: the crossing at 800 North and 700 West, or the crossing at 500 North and 600 West. Together, they document recurring unsafe conditions at the same two crossings used by students, families, people biking, and crossing guards. The reported issues include drivers speeding or failing to yield to crossing guards, children, and families at school crosswalks, as well as vehicles parking in daylighting or no-parking zones near crosswalks. We ask you, the Provo Police Department and City Traffic department, to consider: - Increased and recurring enforcement at the 800 North and 700 West crossing and the 500 North and 600 West crossing during school arrival and dismissal times, with particular attention to speeding, failure to yield to crossing guards and people using the crosswalks, and parking in daylighting or no-parking areas. - A review of more permanent traffic-calming and visibility improvements. Possible options could include raised crosswalks or speed tables where operationally appropriate, curb extensions or other roadway narrowing, shorter crossing distances, improved daylighting, and other measures that slow traffic and make students, parents, and crossing guards more visible. Though I'm sending this in my capacity as a volunteer for provostreets.watch, I also want to share some personal context. My children no longer attend Timpanogos Elementary, but for three years I biked with them to school every day along these same routes and crossings. During that time, I witnessed repeated near misses and unsafe driving behavior and parking along this approved Safe Route to School. Based on the reports we continue to receive, these patterns appear to have continued. A bike bus now rides this route every Friday with often upwards of 30 parents and students traveling together. Children and families who make the effort to use designated school routes and help more students travel by bicycle should be able to do so with a substantially higher level of safety than these reports indicate. Our goal in sharing this information is to help you understand the potential harm and ask for your help keeping these routes safe for everyone who uses them.
